Opuka recovers from a blank to win Shikuku memorial title in Kakamega

Despite firing a blank, Shabanji Opuka recovered well to card 42 stable ford points to win the Donnie Shikuku Eshitemi Memorial golf tournament played today at the Kakamega Sports Club.

Playing handicap 22, Opuka won the title in remembrance of the former club chairman,  with his widow Beatrice Shikuku praising the late husband for the tremendous deeds while still alive.

In his opening nine, Opuka started well with back to back pars in one and two, dropped a shot in third dropped two in 4th recovered with a par in 5th but sunk bogeyed 6th before dropping two in 7th bogeyed in 8th and ended the round with a double bogey for a total of 20 points.

The winner said that they schooled together in Mumias and the late Shikuku wss good at each position he was given.

“He used to tell us that we should be number one and that he perfected well. He was born a leader and died a leader that is why he was an engineer not like some of us,” said Opuka.

In the inward nine, he fired a blank, he sunk three successful pars, with a blank in 14th with several bogeys and double bogeys for 22 solid points to win the title.

“Winning my ‘friends’ tournament is great for me and I wish to continue with such direction. It has been over 15 years since I made such a speech,” he said.

Playing off handicap 17, Bruce Madete won the Division one title with 40 points beating Julius Oketch to second. Oketch, playing off 21 marked 37 points where he led Leah Luchivya and Jack Songwa on count back.

Division 2 category was won by Simon Oketch on 37 points, beating R. Kabutha and Janet Wasike on count back while Briskern Amusala won the Division three title.

Playing handicap 22, Ibrahim Ogeto won the best effort title on 22 points as Opuka returned to the podium for the nearest to pin title.

Faith Chemtai and Edwin Mburu were the longest drive lady’s and men respectively while Innocent Ondiki and Ansh Sharma were the first and second nine winners with 22 and 21 points respectively.
