Challenges of training facilities were the topic of discussion during the Athletics consultative seminar in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County today.
Christened as the home of champions due to the massive number of athletes running in the county, they all lack training facility following the closure of Kamariny stadium for renovation by the national government.
They said their training has been too expenosve because ey are forced to travel to Eldoret about 35km to get a training facility at the University of Eldoret of Moi University, Annex Campus for training.
“We lack facility to train which has brought down the performance of athletes of late, we use a lot of money as fare and some lack to go to Eldoret. In simple term we need stadiums to train.” Said Joan Chelimo.
Athletics Kenya Vice president in-charge of Competition Paul Mutwii said they are concerned on the decline in the performance of steeplechase and Iten being the epicenter of steeplechase.
“We want to improve the welfare and performance of athletes in the country and all over the world.” Said Mutwii
