Jepchirchir call for more local races to accommodate many athletes

Reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir has called for athletes to compete at the local meetings to boost their chances of earning an international races.

Speaking in Kapsabet during the Athletics Kenya Consultative meeting in Kapsabet, Nandi County, and the New York City marathon said the importance of more local races that have been the source of world champions.

“I started at the bottom where local races played a key part. I know there many athletes like myself out there, I want to challenge our leaders to channel more resources to more races at the County level,” he said.

She also called on athletes to form Savings and Credit Coperative Society (SACCO) to elevate them to them to the top.

“It is a pity to see shylocks taking personal properties from athletes because the athletes are not able to repay loans. If we had a Sacco, it could have been easier to borrow from them and be able to return later when things get better,” said former world half marathon record holder

Head of the program Barnaba Korir was in agreement the problem is pertinent that has continued to affect a number of athletes.

“We have heard of several cases of our athletes falling victim to this vice. Our appeal to the athletes is to desist completely from taking this sad path,  which has financially crippled big number of local athletes,” he said.

Korir also challenged the athletes to have a better savings culture to help cushion them from any drastic turn of events brought about by natural disasters and economic downturns as witnessed in recent years.
