Returning Sembi swing into Piga Mingi victory in Kakamega

Returning on the golf course after a month, home player Amarpreet Sembi carded 44 points to win the 2021 edition of Piga Mingi golf tournament played today on Kakamega golf club.

Playing off handicap 39, Sembi recorded only two pars with a number of bogeys and double bogeys to emerge the overall winner in the annual event, the culture of the club where new golfers organize a tournament.

She said she was not sure of the win after returning from the United Kingdom.

“I just returned from the United Kingdom and I had not played any golf for about two months and a win today was so unexpected. I just wanted to have fun on the course, enjoy the game with friends and here I win,” said Mrs Sembi.

She added that the greens were too fast, which posed a challenge.

Playing off handicap 34, Zachariah Kasale was second with 41 points followed by Robertson Osangale on 40 points relegating Bishop Simon Oketch to 4th on count back.

Dereck Mwaura on 34 points was the organizing Committee champion as Inocent Ondieki and J. Ashioya were first and second nine winners on 22 and 20 points respectively.

The tournament, which was divided into two Divisions, with Division one carrying top handicaps from 1-18 for men and 1-22 for women and division two having handicaps 19-35 for men and 23-40 for women.

In division 1, Sylvenas Otiende was the victor on 37 points ahead of Julius Oketch with 36 and Leah Luchivya losing to Oketch on count back for third position.

Betty Bisonga on 38 points was Division 2 winner after carding 38 points beating Onindo Abubakar to second with 37 points and Irene Ashioya to third with 35 points.

Ondieki was on the podium twice to receive the longest Drive men while Vivian Amusala won the lady’s title and Osangale was on the podium again for the nearest to pin title.
