Boit and Jemutai win Mitja half marathon

Kenyans Mike Boit and Purity Jemutai were crowned the champions of Mitja Marato Internacional race held yesterday in Granollers, Spain.

Boit took charge of the race from the 12km mark after the pacer Kiprono Sitonik dropped off.  Dagnachew tried to keep with Kenyans pace but he was too strong to handle as he cut the tape in a time of 1:00.53 which was third fastest time at the course after Sammy Wanjiru’s 59:26 which is the race course record that was set in 2008 with Abraham Kiptum running the second fastest time of 59:26 that he set in 2019.

Dagnachew was forced to settle in second place in with a time of 1:01.01, which was far from his personal best 59:48 that he set in 2021.

Debelu Ede from Ethiopian closed the podium finishes in1:03.51.

In women, Jemutai won the title after coming with focus on the sixteen years course record of  1:10.24 that had been set Gete Wam from Ethiopia.

The Kenyan lived to the expectations as she took charge of the race from the start to the finish cutting the the tape in a new course record of 1:0718 taking off almost three minutes from the previous one.

Ethiopia’s Ethlemahu Sintayehu, was the only rival to Jemutai but she could not keep up with the hot pace and by the 10km mark she was chasing behind by 1:12.

Sintayehu came in home two minutes later as she crossed the line 1:09.35 which also under the previous record.

“In the second part of the route I was aware that I could beat the record”, said Jemutai, who was running her second half marathon in Granollers.

Naomí Mitchell from Britain closed the first three podium finishes in 1:13.10.
