Organizers of the inaugural Agnes Tirop memorial cross country championships set for this Saturday at the Lobo Village in Eldoret have split the race into two categories.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and secretary Kennedy Tanui explained that there shall be the national and international competitions as a way of giving young people an opportunity to showcase their talents.
“At the national event, all our young talents will be showcasing their talents after they were selected from across the country and those who have participated in the weekend cross country meetings like in Machakos, Kapsokwony, Iten and Sotik. We shall start with the curtain raiser with kids below 10 years who will compete in 1km distance. After the 10 year olds, we shall have the under 18 both boys and girls then the world under 20 both girls and boys,” explained Tanui.
At around 2pm, that is when the official opening ceremony will be held then the international.
“After the opening ceremony, we shall parade all heroes of this country who have made this nation proud in cross country running and making this race a Kenyan event. The likes of Paul Tergat, John Ngugi, Isabella Ochichi, Benjamin Limo, Paul Kibowen, Alice Timbilil among others. We have invited 18 of them to be here,” he said.
As the last event of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour series, a series of 14 events that have happened across the world, the overall winners of the entire series will be rewarded.
