Kipsang settle for bronze at World Indoor in Belgrade

Olympian Abel Kipsang won bronze at the concluded World Athletics Indoor championships in Belgrade, Serbia.
The Kenyan, who failed to win a medal at the Olympic Games won the bronze medal in the 1,500m after leading in lap one with the highest speed.

His bronze was the second medal for team Kenya after world under 20 800m bronze medalist Noah Kibet won silver in the 800m on Friday, an improvement from the 2018 event when Bethwel Birgen was the only winner of a medal when he managed a bronze in 3,000m.

Kipsang said “I’m very happy with the bronze because at previous championships I’ve just fallen short. At the African Games in 2019 I finished fourth and at the Olympic Games last year I also finished fourth… Today I’ve improved to third and won bronze and I’m happy. When we go to the World Championship (in Eugene) I will make sure they (Tefera and Ingebrigtsen) don’t finish ahead of me… I must get gold.”

“I like attacking from the front because I can’t survive if I stay at the back… I’m used to front-running. I will now work on my speed and by the time the World Championship comes round, I will be ready I will return to my training base in Kapcherop, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, in Kenya.”

He finished third timing 3:33.36 behind champion Samuel Tefera in 3:32.77 and second placed Jakob Ingebrigtsen in 3:33.03.
