Adel Balala cut into MKO from Africa Amateur Championships

Kenya’s amateur golfers concluded their campaign at the 2026 Africa Amateur Championship with valuable continental experience and a key qualification outcome, as Adel Balala emerged as Kenya’s highest-placed eligible finisher to secure the sixth Kenyan slot at the 2026 Magical Kenya Open (MKO).

The championship, staged at the historic Royal Johannesburg Golf Club’s East Course, was won in emphatic fashion by South Africa’s Jack Buchanan, who claimed the title at 21-under-par.

He was followed by a threeway tie for second place at 15-under-par, featuring South Africans JL de Bruin, Charl Barnard and Ivan Verster. Kenyan Performances Kenya fielded an eight-player team, with all representatives competing against one of the strongest amateur fields assembled on the continent.

Balala finished as the leading Kenyan on the leaderboard, placing tied 21st at five-over-par (293), following rounds of 73, 73, 73 and 74.

His consistent performance across four days earned him the distinction of being Kenya’s top eligible finisher and confirmed his qualification as the sixth Kenyan representative at the 2026 Magical Kenya Open.

John Lejirma finished tied 23rd at seven-over-par (295), while Michael Karanga placed tied 28th at 13-over-par (301). Daniel Kiragu followed closely in tied 30th position at 14-over-par (302), with Josphat Rono ending the week tied 33rd at 16-over-par (304). Elvis Muigua completed his championship in tied 40th place at 22-over-par (310).

Elly Barno and Dennis Maara both missed the cut after the opening two rounds but gained valuable experience competing at continental championship level.

Lejirma praised the intensity of competition and the opportunity to test himself on the continental stage.

“The level of competitive golf being played here has really made me work hard,” said Lejirma. “Getting the opportunity to play in such a prestigious international tournament is truly a dream come true for me.”

He added that competing in South Africa carried special significance and provided strong motivation. “Being in South Africa means a lot to me. Seeing the quality and depth of competition from the South African players is a huge motivation and shows you exactly where you need to be as a golfer.”

Lejirma also highlighted the strong camaraderie within the Kenyan camp throughout the championship.
