Holders Shujaa edged out compatriots Kenya Morans to lift the Safari 7s the annual rugby 7s championships that came to an end today at the Nyayo national stadium in the Kenyan Capital, Nairobi.
In an all Kenyan affair at the finals, Shujaa beat Morans 24-05 for the 5th title in a row extending unbeaten run at the tournament to 29 consecutive matches, with their last defeat coming against Germany during the 2021 group stage.
Morans failed to recapture the 2019 title after beating South Africa 19-14.
The deadlock was finally broken after the restart when Rayvone Ambale sold a dummy before diving over for the opening try, which he converted to give Shujaa a 7-0 lead.
Shujaa doubled their advantage following a counter-ruck, with Victor Mola collecting the ball and dancing through the Morans defence to score. The conversion pushed the lead to 14-0.
The reigning champions continued to assert their authority, with Festus Shiasi diving over for another try before John Okoth added to the tally, stretching Shujaa’s advantage to 24-0
Morans eventually found a consolation through Dennis Ndayala, who finished off a move initiated by substitute Harrison Mauve after the latter broke clear to set up the try. However, it was too late to spark a comeback as Shujaa secured a commanding 24-5 victory.
