Ella Demesi Eyes Dakar Glory in Boxing at Youth Olympic Games

Kenya’s Ella Demesi is ready to make history on the global stage as she sets her sights on Youth Olympic Games gold in Dakar, Senegal.

At just 16 years old, Ella Demesi is already making her mark in Kenyan sport. She has made history as Kenya’s first female boxer to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games, and now, she is chasing an even bigger dream — winning gold.

Competing in the 51-kilogram category, Demesi is preparing to represent Kenya at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, scheduled for October 31 to November 13 in Senegal.

Her journey into boxing began close to home, inspired by her brother, who used to train in the sport. Watching him sparked an interest that would eventually grow into a passion of her own.

What began as inspiration has now become a pursuit of excellence, with Demesi determined to prove herself among the world’s best young boxers.

Through discipline, commitment and a willingness to learn, she has steadily developed her skills, embracing the physical demands and mental toughness required to compete at the highest level of youth boxing.

Her coach, David Munuhe, says Demesi’s discipline, eagerness to learn and natural movement stood out from the beginning. These qualities have helped shape her development as she continues to sharpen her technique and prepare for the challenge ahead.

With the countdown to Dakar underway, the focus is on building the strength, endurance and confidence she will need when she steps into the ring against international opposition.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will bring together some of the world’s most promising young athletes, marking a historic first as the Olympic event heads to African soil.

For Demesi, however, the occasion means much more than competing for a medal. It is an opportunity to fly the Kenyan flag, gain valuable international experience and inspire more young girls to believe that boxing is a sport where they, too, can excel.

Her qualification is already a significant milestone for Kenyan women’s boxing. But Demesi is not travelling to Dakar simply to make up the numbers. She has her eyes firmly fixed on the ultimate prize.

Inspired by her brother, guided by her coach and driven by her own ambition, she now stands on the brink of the biggest test of her young career.

As Dakar draws closer, one thing is clear: Ella Demesi is ready to step into the ring, carry Kenya’s hopes and fight for a place among the champions. From a spark of inspiration at home to the pursuit of Olympic glory, Ella Demesi’s story is only just beginning
