Christened Home of champions, Elgeryo Marakwet is set to host the national relay championships cum trials for world relay championships set for Yokohama, Japan next month.
This becomes the first time that Athletics Kenya (A.K) is hosting the national championships outside Nairobi as sprinters are set to compete for the coveted slot into Kenya team in Japan.
Local Organizing committee has enough confidence that the championships due to their preparedness at The Lornah Kiplagat stadium in Iten.
Public Relations officer Boniface Tiren was optimistic that the event, being run in the home of champions will be a success.
With the county associated with athletics, Tiren urged fans, athletes and locals to come and witness the home boys and girls tackle the track.
Tiren added that Lornah stadium has enough facilities that can even handle the newly introduced Shuttle Hurdle among other events.
“We want to see the unique thing that was introduced to relays on Saturday,” said Tiren as host chairman Pius Lai was optimistic of the successful event in his county.
“We are all set for the event. We are requesting locals to turn up in good numbers. All camps in the county have been invited to cheer their own athletes. As the hosts, we don’t want to let anyone down because this will be the first ever event outside Nairobi and it is a plus for us. The county has over 2,000 athletes and we want to ensure sobriety.
