After anchoring the national team -Word Warriors-to claim the East, Central and Southern Africa (ECASA) championships in Livingstone, Zambia, Allan Oyende proved his worth by winning the 4th leg of Scrabble Kenya championships held over the weekend in Nyeri.
As part of a build up for the qualifiers to the Africa Scrabble Championship in Uganda, second seed Oyende carried his imperious form from ECASA to win the championship with a round to spare.
Following his win, Oyende will be taking on the 5th leg in Kituyi as Kenya One (top seed). His spirited fight wordsmith, managed to beat top Kenya Patrick Nderitu Gitonga to second place with Muema Muumbi having the longest world (RECLI(N)ED) to hit Machakos county’s Patrick Litunya with a 158 word play in round one on his way to bag the high word play of the event
Oyende fended stiff challenge from his Stima Club teammates and top seed Nderitu of Kirinyaga County on his way to the crown and is now Kenya’s top seed going to round 5 in Kitui next month
Martin Mutahi, the Standard Chartered Bank captain made a maiden podium this year.
Unbeaten Caroline Muya won the Youth Division and carried her rack home ahead of Rose Natalie and Hareet Patel
In the Open Division, Tom Mboya beat debutant George Kithinji of Meru county and Kirinyaga County top female player Jacinta Kiragu
Nairobi’s Bernard Koyoko combined with Nyeri’s Francis Theuri for the highest combined score of 1042
Action now swings to Kitui county on 12th and 13th May for the next round.
