Seeded second, scrabble player Allan Oyende led the Word Warriors, the national Scrabble team defend the East, Central and Southern Africa (ECASA) Scrabble Champions that came to an end on Sunday evening at Kaazmein Lodge in Livingstone, Zambia.
The Stima Club man won gold as Kenyans took the first four positions with Patrick Mpundu spoiling the top ten places in the 14th edition of the regional championships.
Joash Manyasa, Stanley Njoroge and Nicholas Mbugua were in second,third and fourth respectively at the championships.
Oyende emerged victorious after he wrapped up the title with 2 rounds to spare, Manyasa (19 +861) lifted silver ahead of teammate Stanley Njoroge (18 +649) who settled for bronze.
Wenwa Akinyi, the only Kenyan female top player successfully defended her queen of word title coming home 9th
But Patrick Mpundu (17 +706) of Zambia anchored his team to silver coming home 5th
In the team contest Kenya retained gold, Zambia bagged silver with South Africa edging Tanzania to bronze.
Scrabble Kenya secretary general Muumbi Muema was optimistic that Kenyan team will topple Nigeria in the Africa Nations Scrabble championships to be staged in Kampala, Uganda in September.
“The team gave their all, got the results over the board.we will use this as a stepping stone as we prepare to dethrone Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (PANASA),” said Muema.
