It was tears, sorrow and sympathy as the body of former world cross country champion Agnes Jebet Tirop was moved from the Eldoret Hospital Mortuary on-route to her parents’ home in Kapnyamisa Village in Nandi County.
Elite athletes led by former world javelin champions Julius Yego, former 800m world champion Janeth Jepkosgei, former 3,000m steeplechase world champion, Milcah Chemos, former worl 800m champion, Eunice Sum, marathon queen Mary Keitany among others led a procession from the morgue, bringing the business within the Eldoret Central Business Disctrict to a standstill as athletes marched on the streets.
When the procession ended, her body was moved in a high end-vehicle lining up along the Eldoret Kapsabet Road to Kapnyamisa Primary School in Nandi Couny for a requiem mass.
The two time world 10,000m bronze medalist Tirop, who was murdered in her house in Iten last week is set to be laid to rest tomorrow in her parents’ home in Kapnyamisa village, Nandi County.
Thousands of top athletes, coaches and athletics lovers had a procession in the honour of the late Tirop where athletes held the big banner baring the big photo of Tirop with the agenda of “End Gender Based Violence,” to signify the murder of an athlete with the killer suspected to be her husband Ibrahim Rotich, who is now in custody.
