Former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei won the Shanghai Marathon yesterday with the a course record in China.
The former Olympic marathon silver medalist won the race after timing 2:16:36, the fastest women’s marathon time ever recorded on Chinese soil after beating compatriot Irine Cheptai and Ethiopia’s Tiruye Mesfin and Bekelech Gudeta.
Shanghai proved to be a good home for Kosgei with best time after setting the world record in 2:14:04 in 2019 at the Chicago marathon.
At 31 years, Kosgei also won the two-time London, Tokyo, Chicago, Honolulu among others.
Cheptai followed in a season’s best 2:18:51, while Mesfin placed third in 2:20:38 .
It was an Ethiopian podium sweep in men with Milkesa Mengesha winning in 2:06:25 followed by Dawit Wolde and Deresa Geleta in 2:06:36.
