Champion Obiri to battle Jepchirchir at Great North Run

Reigning Great North Run half marathon champion Hellen Obiri will be taking on reigning Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir at the race next Sunday 11th in the Great Britain.

The two time world 5,000m champion Obiri won the race last year in 67:42 before winning RAK in 64:22.

Jepchirchir will be running the race for the first time who has the 65.06 will be facing off with Ethiopian duo of Hiwot Gebrekidan and former Olympic 10,000m champion Almaz Ayana who will also be contesting for a podium finish. Gebrekidan and Ayana have personal best times of 1:06:47 and 1:07:12 respectively.

Gebrekidan is the winner of the 2016 Copenhagen Half Marathon. She is also a former World Under-20 3000m silver medalist. Ayana won in the 2017 edition of the New Delhi Half Marathon. She is also a former world 10,000m record holder when she broke China’s Wang Junxia record during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
