Reigning champions Senegal defeated Sudan to win the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) bronze in a third play-off match played at the Mandela National stadium in Kampala, Uganda today.
The Lions of Teranga, who have missed a chance to defend their CHAN title after falling to Morocco in a semifinal match played in Tanzania, drew 1-1 with Sudan that lost to Madagascar in a semifinal played in Uganda, won 4-2 in the penalty shootouts.
The Falcons of Jediane side Sudan’s Mohamed Tia Asad headed home the first goal in the 6th minute for a 1-0 lead into break before Seyni Ndiaye leveld for Senegal from a header in the 58th minute to force the match into post match penalties.
Sudan’s Walieldin Khdir missed the penalty before Mohamed Ahmed Saeed and Ahmed Tabanja scored and Musab Makeen shot was saved by Marc Diouf while Senegal converted all her spot kicks from Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and finally Libasse Guèye for the final 4-2.
The victory was good for Souleymane Diallo’s Senegal after failing to defend the title but tears for Sudanese John Kwesi Appiah from Ghana.
Tomorrow, Kenya will be hosting the final match between Morocco and Madagascar at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani.
