Former world cross country champion Irene Chepet Cheptai and Nairobi 10km champion Peter mwaniki were the winners of today’s Devolution 5km held in Eldoret.
The reigning Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medalist said won the women’s race 17:04.6 ahead of Sophia Jepchirchir (17:05.5) and Winnie Jemutai (17:16.1).
After missing the World cross country championships in Bathurst Australia earlier in the year due to an injury, she said that she been healed ready for Competition.
“I am free from injury, read to compete at the Copenhagen half marathon set for September 17th,” said Cheptai.
She added that the race was part of her preparations for the Copenhagen.
“It was a real struggle at the start but I thank God I came home victorious,” she said who has officially quit track for road running.
Nyandarua based Peter Mwaniki won the men’s race after clocking 15:09.1 ahead of ahead of Weldon Langat to second after clocking 15:12.5 and Charles Rotich completing the podium after timing 15:13.3.
“This year has been good for me, winning Nairobi 10km, Belgut 10km and Last Sunday’s Uasin Gishu half marathon and today I win the 5km. this are blessings,” said Mwaniki from Nyandarua County.
He said that he was pushed to victory when the favourite Langat failed to speed to the finish and took advantage in the last minutes.
“I have been pushed to run well because I have family, children wife and grandmother who have been motivating me to continue with my talent especially after winning in Nairobi,” he said.
