Cheyech and Njuguna top at Iten International marathon

Former Commonwealth Games marathon champion Flomena Cheyech and Simon Njuguna were the winners to today’s 4^th edition of Iten International Marathon held in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Njuguna was the surprise winner of the elite 42km men on his marathon debut after traveling all the way from Nyahururu cut the tape in 2:12:09 followed by Edwin Tuitoek and Denis Kibiwott in 2:12:31 and 2:12:31 in second and third positions respectively.

 “I don’t have a manager and it is my hope that I will be signed after this achievement. My focus will be on international races next year,” said Njuguna.

Cheyech, the 2014 Commonwealth champion won the women’s marathon after returning from maternity leave.

The 43 year old won the race after clocking 2:32:11 followed Beijing Half Marathon champion Susy Chemaimak who came in second in 2:34:34 while Irene Jeruto closed the podium positions in 2:35:19.

In the 10km, Ugandan international Joy Cheptoyek and James Kiprotich were the winners.

In women, Cheptoyek won the title in 33:21.51 ahead of Judy Chepngetich and Nancy Jepkemei who finished second and third in 34:17:05 respectively.

Kiprotich edged out world 5000m silver medallist Jacob Krop

Winners of the full marathon will be awarded Sh1 million prize. Top 20 athletes will be awarded in each category.
