David Some swings into Mulembe golf tournament victory

Professor David Some floored top professional golfers to win the Mulembe Golf Society tournament played today on par 73 Kitale Golf club.

The Eldoret based golfer fired carded 69 stable ford points to emerge victorious after firing 83 gross when played seven over in the first nine and three over in the second nine.

The University of Eldoret lecturer floored professionals golfers led by Mumias’ Dismas Indiza, Muthaiga’s Kopan Timbe, Kenya Air-Force Kevin Mabele and Eldoret’s Boniface Simwa as the tournament, for the first time was held outside Nairobi.

Playing off handicap 14, Some sunk back to back pars hole one and two par five and four, dropped a shot on 3, dropped two shots on four, dropped a shot on 5 and 6 recovered with three pars on 7, 8 and nine to end the first nine with seven over par.

With the tournament being played outside Nairobi for the first time, 96 golfers took to the greens ahead of Christmas festivities.

He fired three over par in the last nine when he sunk three pars in a row on 10th, 11th and 12th dropped a shot on 13th and 14th before parred on 15th, 16th and 17th and bogeyed on 18th.

Some said he played well despite missing the course for four years. Playing early morning, he said he managed time well to claim the title.

“I came here to play golf after four years but my return has yielded good results. I wanted to play the course but a few green challenges and putting cost me,” said Some.

“I played well, making sure I stay on the fairways though the greens are not in good condition. They have to be maintained to attain quality golf. I have been playing at Muthaiga and the course is perfect,” added Some.

Mulembe golf captain Robinson Owiti said they started the tournament to familiarize themselves with golfers across the country.

“Our target is to get as many members as possible. This is the first time we are playing outside Nairobi and we want to make it big,” said Owiti who was accompanied by Sammy Itemere, the society chairman and Wafula Chebukati, the patron.

Itemere was the societies’ champion ahead of Owiti and S. Lugalia while Eldoret chairman Andrew Chelogoi was the guest winner with Naomi Wafula taking the lady’s winners’ prize. John Ruto and Wafula were the longest drive men and ladies winner as R. Chebukati was the nearest to the pin winner.
