The reigning East Africa and Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association 200m champions Alvin Inyangu and Merryline Chepkirui are optimistic that Kenya will be the powerhouse in sprints in the near future.
Inyangu, who did his Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) at the Nyang’ori Boys, said he has started his preparations for the 2024 World U-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, and hopes to return home with a medal.
Speaking at Ebwali Athletics Kenya Training Camp in Vihiga County, Inyangu said the camp setting helps the athletes to concentrate on training.
“This year, I have had a good outing and I hope to take my career to another level because of this support. At least I have quality time to focus on training.
Inyangu settled for silver at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games and recorded similar results at the national championships held in Eldoret.
“Apart from winning the individual titles in 200m and finishing second in 100m, I also won the 4x100m both nationally and in Rwanda,” said Inyangu.
He said that he has specialized in short races like the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relays and he will use the events as part of his build-up for the Peru ticket.
Chepkirui won the AK track and field shot put title in Kisumu over the weekend. At Ebwali, Inyangu and Chepkirui train alongside other top athletes like Bravin Indusa who competes in the 1,500m, Abigael Kananga (triple jump) and Godwin Amani (long jump).
