Kenya Harlequins won their Kenya Cup match opener against Mwamba RFC played today at RFUEA ground to earn bonus points.
The hosts won a three point margin on 29-26 after they scored four tries by the interval as they led 24-5 before returning to add the fifth immediately after the break through Solomon Okia. A penalty try was awarded to Quins after an infringement.
Mwamba got into the game with a 21 unanswered points in the second half. Brian Kivasia started what looked like Mwamba’s comeback with Pharell Mtaani, Michael Agevi and Brad Owako also going over but time was not on their side for the mission to be completed.
Quins picked five points with Mwamba picking two losing bonus points for losing with less than seven points and scoring four tries. KCB and Kabras Sugar are the only other sides to have won with a bonus like Quins while Homeboyz, Blak Blad and Strathmore join Mwamba in picking losing bonus points.
It was Charles Cardovillis’ first game as a Quins head coach and described the win as “great”.
Commenting on the second half where Mwamba scored 21 points, Cardovillis said “we didn’t manage the game well, ill discpline cost us, two yellows.”
Mwamba’s next match is against Homeboyz at home while Quins head to Nakuru to face Menengai Oilers.
The clash was initially set for Saturday but pushed forward to Sunday to pave way for the burial of former Quins start David ‘Madilu’ Gitau.
