Kipruto, Korir, Chebet shines at Continental Cup in Ostrava

Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto, Emmanuel Korir and Africa 1,500m champion Winny Chebet won three gold medals for Africa in the opening day Continental Cup in Ostrava.

The world 3,000m steeplechase champion Kipruto won the continent her third gold on the first day beating his close competitor Soufiane El Bakkali to second.

The Commonwealth champion in water and barriers won in 8:22.55 followed by Canadian international Matthew Highes in 8:29.70 as Italy’s Yohanes Chiappinelli completed the podium in 8:32.82.

After anchoring the national team to win Africa 4x400m Emmanuel Korir  beat Botswana’s Nijel Amos to win 800m title in 1:44.50. Clayton Murphy for team America’s came in second in 1:46.77 with Amos closing the podium three finishes with the same time.

Chebet, who has been finishing second in major events, made her first win in Lagos last month and today won the third gold for Africa in 1,500m.

Chebet won in 4:16.01 with Shelby Houlihan coming home second in 4:16.36. Moroccan Rababe Arafi closed the podium three finishes in 4:17.19.
