Kipyegon, Wanyonyi and Chebet nominated for World Athletics year Award

Three world record holders Faith Kipyegon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Beatrice Chebet have been nominated by World Athletics Awards 2025.

The athletics governing body confirmed the nominees for Women and men Track Athlete of the Year.

According to the body, five nominees for the two categories, and a vote will take place to identify the two finalists after their standout performances achieved during another memorable year for the sport.

Kenyans Kipyegon, the world 1,500m champion and silver in 10,000m and setting 1,500m world record  and Chebet, who managed to win world 5,000m and 10,000m gold as well as setting the 5,000m world record will battle out with Netherlands’ Feke Bol, the World and Diamond League 400m hurdles champion, who remained undefeated in the 400m hurdles, with the top three performances of the year.

Others include Melissa Jefferson, the world 100m, 200 and undefeated in the 100m, with the top five performances of the year and Sydney McLaughlin of the USA the world 400m and 4x400m champion and remained undefeated in 400m and 400m hurdles, with second-fastest 400m of all time.

World champion Wanyonyi, the world 800m champion, Diamond League winner and four time top six performance, will be up against USA’s Rai Benjamin, the world 400m hurdles champion and double of the top three 400m hurdles performances of the year, Jimmy Gressier from France won World 10,000m, 5000m bronze medallist and Diamond League 3000m champion; Noah Lyles, also American and world 200m and 4x100m champion and 100m bronze medallist, with unbeaten in the 200m, including the Diamond League title, another American Cordell Tinch is the World and Diamond League 110m hurdles champion and a four of the top six performances of the year.

The vote to determine the Track Athlete of the Year finalists is now open on World Athletics social media platforms – on FacebookInstagram and X. It will close on 19 October.

The nominees for the Field Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on 20 October and the nominees for the Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on 27 October.

The overall women’s and men’s World Athlete of the Year award winners will be selected from among the track, field and out of stadium category winners.
