KRU extends Kevin Wambua’s contract as Shujaa coach

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has extended the contract of Shujaa, the Kenya Sevens head coach Kevin Wambua’s contract for the net two years.

Yesterday, the union chsirman Alexander Mutai announced that Wambua, had initially been given a three-month contract when he was announced head coach in August but has been extended for two more years and will culminate with the 2026 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

This follows success in the Africa Cup-cum-Olympic qualifiers in September, Safari Sevens in November, and Challenger Sevens Series early this month in Dubai.

Mutai said they are following the best practices from the leading rugby nations,  where coaches are rewarded according to consistency in results.

Wambua has had several coaching roles in the last couple of years. He served as an assistant coach to former coaches Englishman Damian McGrath, and Innocent Simiyu, as well as coaching Mwamba and guiding Laiser Hill to the schools’ Sevens title and East Africa regional crown among others

Wambua’s assistant Louis Kisia, former Kenya Sevens skipper Andrew Amonde, strength and conditioning coach Lameck Bogonko (physiotherapist) and team manager Steve Sewe have been given new deals.
