Limo calls for more athletes to register for Kisumu City half marathon

Former world 5,000m champion Benjamin Limo has urged athletes to turn up in large numbers to compete at the Kisumu City Half marathon set for September 24th in Kisumu County.

As the ambassador of the race, Limo said that their role was to advise athletes competing in the race to embrace fairplay among other virtues associated with sports across the world.

Popularly called Mr Helsinki or 508 due to his trade mark in the running circles, Limo said that their main role is to spread good news for the race.

“I work is already cut out and we support fairplay in sports. We are telling our young people to remain focused, free from drugs and other malpractices in sports,” said Limo.

He said that he has been urging young people not to rush and compete in road races before they mature enough before hitting the road.

He added that during their days, they represented the country and ran for many years because they had a well planned system and career unlike some athletes who have focused on money making ventures in road running at a tender age.

“Us, we tried and were consistent in track, cross country, and running for more years. I know in this race, we have a good plan for the future to make it a full marathon,” said Limo.

“Recent athletes have depended on road running and drug use. We try to tell athletes to run to cut short their careers. We also educate athletes on how to invest. We are speaking from the horses’ mouth,” he said.

With the race set to be run on the same day as the Berlin marathon, Limo said that will not deter their race because it will be an avenue for the young athletes to run well locally.

“Apart from the 21km, we shall also have the 10km elite race and 5km family and fun run. We are urging athletes and individuals from all walks of life to come and run in the race with a noble idea,” he said
