Maurice Mido’s goal gives Eldoret Poly record title

Eldoret Polytechnic and National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) were crowned the champions of football and volleyball men and women as national Kenya Technical Institutions Sports Association (KETISA) came to an end on Wednesday evening at the Eldoret Polytechnic ground.

Maurice Mido’s lone goal is what the hosts Eldoret Polytechnic needed to win the title after edging out their perenual rivals Kisumu Polytechnic at the football final match that ended prematurely when the latter players boycotted the last 20 minutes of the match after conceding.

Mido tapped in the winner as the ball rolled into the empty net after beating defenders and goalkeeper Victor Kiprono on 48th minute to claim their 12th title, the last one was won in 2016.

The final watched by both institutions’ principals -Josephat Sawe and Joyce Nyanjom, who doubles as chairperson and vice chairperson respectively,  the match was forced to be abandoned that was to lead to unrest.

Eldoret coach Odindo Agwero, the man who won Moi Golden Cup with Rivatex said the title was a sign of discipline and whatever they have been practicing, was well executed on the pitch.

“We had many friendly matches and that exposed our players. I knew we were going to win the title considering we were at home and had prepared well,” said Agwero.

His opponent Peter Odhiambo expressed dissatisfaction claiming the referee was unfair, considering his players boycotted playing.

“We had a good game but the referee distorted the match with unfair fouls. The players claimed that he admitted that the trophy can’t leave Eldoret and the favours were well exhibited. I even tried telling them to play but they rejected,” claimed Odhiambo.

Dennis Injen converted a penalty to see off Meru Polytechnic in the semifinals.
