Mwala Farmer Bernard Musyoki Wins a Million as Tujiamini National Gold Award Winner

SportPesa has today unveiled Bernard Musyoki from Mwala, Machakos County, as the National Gold Winner of Tujiamini 2.0, awarding him KES 1 million for an innovative agricultural project that helps smallholder farmers beat unpredictable rainfall and improve food security in arid and semi-arid areas.

Musyoki’s initiative focuses on early seedling propagation, enabling farmers to transplant crops immediately when the rains begin. By staying 30 to 45 days ahead of the planting season, farmers cut crop maturity time by over a month, improve yields, and reduce the risk of total crop failure. The project currently supports maize, cereal, and vegetable farmers, and has already created five permanent and eight part-time jobs for youth and women in the local community.

Speaking after receiving the award, Musyoki said the funding would be transformational for both his project and the farmers he works with.“This support gives us the capacity to scale what is already working. For farmers in ASAL regions, timing is everything. With this funding, we can expand seedling production, reach more farmers, and protect livelihoods that depend entirely on the rain. Winning this award is not just a personal milestone, it is a vote of confidence in solutions coming from the community itself.”

Alongside the National Gold Winner, three Silver Winners were also recognised for their community-driven impact. They include Mordecai Otieno, a Nairobi-based music producer and instrumentalist supporting emerging artists through production and mentorship.

Also recognised were Kapten Branham Wasike, representing a youth group in Bungoma that has built sustainable enterprises spanning poultry farming, mobile money services, and plans for a community cyber café, and Mary Chepkoi, whose work with a deaf basketball programme in Kiambu County is building inclusive pathways for deaf athletes to train, compete, and gain national exposure.

Japheth Akhulia from SportPesa said the winners reflect the true spirit of Tujiamini 2.0.
“Tujiamini was built to back people who are solving real problems in their communities. From food security and youth employment to inclusion through sport and creative expression, these winners show what is possible when belief meets opportunity. We are proud of the impact Tujiamini 2.0 has had nationwide and the tangible change it continues to unlock.”

Tujiamini 2.0 has toured counties across Kenya, reaching the Central, Western, North Rift, North Eastern, Eastern, Coast, Nairobi, Nyanza, and South Rift regions identifying and supporting over  488 beneficiaries and 15 grassroot football teams driving impact at the grassroots level. Through its Gold, Silver, and Bronze Community Awards, the initiative has unlocked over KES 30 million in funding, supporting projects in agriculture, sports, creative industries, entrepreneurship, and social impact. The platform exists to turn belief into action by giving local changemakers the resources they need to grow ideas that improve lives.

As Tujiamini 2.0 wraps up its national journey, the programme continues to demonstrate that lasting change is built from within communities, by people who understand local challenges and are committed to solving them.
