SportPesa Unveils Waithira, Ambani as Player, Coach of the Month Awards

Murang’a Seal skipper Joe Waithira and AFC Leopards coach coach Fred Ambani  were crowned the SportPesa League Player and coach of the Month for December 2025 respectively after an outstanding run.

Waithira beat competition from Ovella Ochieng’, Tyson Otieno, Paul Okoth, Jimmy Owili and Bixente Lizarazu after scoring four goals in three matches, helping Murang’a SEAL collect seven points from a possible nine and remain unbeaten throughout the month.

His goals came against Nairobi United, Kenya Police and a brace away to Mara Sugar, underlining his consistency and match-winning influence. For his performances, Waithira received a KES 50,000 cash prize and a customized trophy courtesy of SportPesa.

Speaking after receiving the award, Waithira said he was grateful for the recognition and thanked his teammates and the technical bench for the team formation and training that contributed to his success. He dedicated the award to the club’s longest and most loyal fan, the late Mzee Kiangani, who passed away at the age of 71, noting that he changed his jersey number to 71 in his honour.

AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani was named the SportPesa League Coach of the Month for December after guiding Ingwe through an impressive unbeaten run of three wins and one draw, conceding just once and keeping three clean sheets to finish the year at the top of the table. Ambani edged out KCB’s Robert Matano and Tusker FC’s Charles Okere following standout results that included a 1-0 Mashemeji Derby victory over Gor Mahia, a resilient draw against Kenya Police and narrow wins over Ulinzi Stars and Bidco United. The Coach of the Month award, which comes with a KES 75,000 cash prize and a customized trophy, was presented by SportPesa

Partnerships and Sponsorships Manager Japheth Akhulia, who spoke on the growing impact of the awards on the league.

“This award has brought a new level of competitiveness to the league, making it more unpredictable and exciting for the fans. With partners like Tisini providing detailed statistics and data on players and coaches before and after matches, and with expectations of extending this to halftime interactions, we are committed to making the league more engaging. We also have more plans coming up, including an end-of-season gala that will bring together all 18 teams to celebrate Kenyan football,” said Akhulia.

Upon receiving his award, Ambani thanked league sponsors SportPesa for recognizing the team’s efforts, appreciated AFC Leopards players for their fight on the pitch, and stated his ambition to win more awards while leading the club to finish the season as champions.
