Thirteen-year-old Jadon Simiyu crowned the 2025 Kenya National Chess Champion

Thirteen-year-old schoolboy Jadon Simiyu was crowned the 2025 Kenya National Chess Champion after a thrilling national championship that concluded on December 31 2025.

The Grade 8 pupil at Moi Primary School (Junior School) in Kabarak ended the year on a historic high, shattering age records to become the youngest-ever national champion and signaling the rise of a fearless new generation in Kenyan chess.

Simiyu stunned the chess fraternity by dethroning seasoned campaigners to claim the coveted title and drive home a brand-new Nissan Note valued at KSh 1.4 million — a powerful symbol that age is truly just a number.

In what was unfamiliar territory for many, the teenage sensation outplayed established stars including Grandmaster (GM) Ben Magana, former 2022 champion Mehul Gohil, and experienced contender Kenneth Omolo. He completed the tournament with an impressive record of eight wins, two draws, and just one loss.

His remarkable triumph not only capped a memorable year but also marked a generational shift in the sport as youthful talent continues to challenge the old guard.

In the women’s category, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Jully Mutisya also emerged victorious and similarly drove away with a Nissan Note as her championship prize.
