London marathon champion Vivian Cheruiyot will be taking on reigning world half marathon record holder Joyciline Jepkosgei in Sunday’s Great North Run in the former colonial masters land.
The Olympic 5,000m Cheruiyot will be looking for her second title since she won in 2016 in road race debut and lost the title to Mary Keitany in 2017 who went ahead of beat her on 2018 London marathon course as Caroline Kipkirui closing the podium three finish.
Jepkosgei will be running her debut on the course after breaking Peres Jepchirchir’s world record to 64:51 during Prague Half Marathon last year where she also broke the world 10km, 15km and 20km records.
She went on to beat her own 10km world record time back in Prague three months later when she clocked 29.43 to become the first woman to ever run under the 30 minutes mark in the distance.
