Kenya television networks’ (KTN) sports anchor Moses Wakhisi has been elected as the new Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Secretary General during the special general Meeting held in Mombasa today.
In a two horse race battle with fierce campaigns, Wakhisi triumphed against Royal Media Service (RMS) Isaac Swila to take the position that was left vacant following the resignation of Citizen TV’s Mike Okinyi who resigned from the position and never defended his post.
Wakhisi garnered 69 votes to beat Swila who managed 30 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Wakhisi said: “I am truly honored and excited to take on this role and contribute to the growth and development of our association. In this position, my main focus will be on building and strengthening SJAK. I will work closely with President (James Waindi) and the entire executive committee to ensure that we fulfill our mission and vision. Together, we will strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all our members.”.
“I am pleased that my senior Swila has pledged to work with all of us and that is leadership at its best . Unity within SJAK is crucial for our success. I believe that by working together and valuing each other’s contributions, we can achieve great things. I am committed to fostering collaboration and open communication among all members of SJAK,” he he said adding that in the coming days and weeks, he will be reaching out to each member individually to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations.
In the conceding speech, Swila said that the journey of picking the SJAK SG has been long but members exercised patience, humility and maturity by practicing democracy within SJAK to make it better.
“Duties bestowed on us as the Fourth Estate I’d implore that we stay true to this cause and exercise what we preach. Our elections should not be divisive and cheap politics taking ethnic undertones should have no place in our association. Above all I profoundly hail those who showed faith in my ability to play apart in the SJAK leadership and those who cast their lot with Mr. Moses Wakhisi. I heartily congratulate him for his win this evening. Above all SJAK is the ultimate winner,” he said.
Wakhisi now takes over the most powerful office for the full officer bearers following the other elections held in April in Nairobi.
The elections were conducted by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Rebecca Mutiso a former People Daily Newspaper Editor
