Fresh from winning the world under 20 10,000m national trials walk, two time Kenya Secondary schools Sports Association (KSSSA) 10,000m Race Walk silver medalist Hemstone Wanyonyi has set his eyes for the forthcoming world under 20 championships.
Wanyonyi, who has been playing second fiddle to World under 18 10,000m bronze medalist Dominic Ndigit, it was time for the athlete to shine to win the race in 43:50 minutes.
Back in school to complete his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education at Ortum Boys in West Pokot County said that winning the race is a sign of good thongs ahead.
“It was a day to remember in my career as a junior runner especially the technicalities of walk but I managed to claim the top position,” said Wanyonyi.
With is focused to the world under 20 championships to be held in Kenya at the Kasarani stadium, Wanyonyi will be failing to win the clinch the national schools title after playing second fiddle to Ndigit for two years.
Wanyonyi says that 2020 was his year to shine at the schools but coronavirus has put his title waiting after Ndigit completed secondary school last year.
“This was a milestone in my career after competing in the first race this year. It is also bad for me since I have missed school championships,” said Wanyonyi after returning to his home in West Pokot.
With his ambitions, Wanyonyi was the silver medalist at the 2018 and 2019 KSSSA in 10,000m walk in 42:03 losing to Ndigit in the two years.
On Saturday, he managed to win the title in 43:50 with the qualifying time for world under 20 set for 43:30.
“Right now I have focused to win the qualifying time and secure team Kenya. From there, Kenyans should expect golf from me,” he assured.
The walker said he is focused to walk for the country at the postponed World under 20 Athletics championships to be staged in Nairobi.
With lack of training crack across the county and country at large, Wanyonyi and travels all the way to Kenyatta stadium in Kitale for speed work among others.
