Three penalties saved University of Eldoret (UoE) side Trojans who set up good revenge against Eldoret RFC in an Eldoret derby in the ongoing KRU Championships, the Kenya Rugby second-tier league played today at the University ground.
The hosts won 9-8 in a return leg after Eldoret won the first leg 6-7 in November.
Edwin Yatich converted the first penalty to give Eldoret a 3-0 lead as the visitors dominated the first half, losing two three-try-making chances, camping in their opponents half.
But once chance forward, UOE E won a penalty that Dennis Mwanga shot past the posts to level before adding the second penalty to give UOE a 6-3 lead into the break.
On resumption, Caxton Aresi touched down for the first time to give Eldoret side a 6-8 lead after failed to add extras but determined Mwanga converted the third penalty to win the match 9-8.
UOE coach Kelvin Mwisheni said the win did not come easy and witnessed how the boys worked hard for the victory.
“We are done with today and we focus on the next match. It was one of the difficulty derby and winning it was not a walk in the park,” said Mwisheni.
In other results, Strathmore Leos maintained their top position following a 16-08 victory against former Kenya Cup side Mean Machine as Mombasa capitalised on home ground to defeat Northern Suburbs 8-0.
