Mumbe, Lemama books a double as AK Southern select world U20 team

Gladys Mumbe and Emmanuel Lemama scooped double titles at the Athletics Kenya Southern Region World under 20 Athletics championships pre-trials held at the Machakos Boys’ high school grounds.

While Leakey Kamina and Sharon Ndanu, all from Machakos county were the winners in the 5,000m titles.

Coming from Machakos, Mumbe won the 400m and 200m while Lemama won the 800m and 1,500m titles, booking for national trials where the federation will be using the event to select a formidable team for the world under 20 championships that will be held at the Kasarani stadium between 17th and 23rd July.

Mumbe won the 400m in 57.37 ahead of Rebecca Ndotu (59.8) as she clinched the 200m title in 26.0 beating Damaris Mutunga 26.3) from Macakos and Jackline Mikayo, also from machakos in 26.8.

In men’s 400m, Makueni’s Francis Kimweu won the title in 49.86 beating Calvin Mwendwa (Makueni) in 50.5 and Machakos’ Cornelius Kioko in 50.8 for third position.

Lemama, also went for s double with the men’s 800m in 1:50.4 beating Felix Muthiani (1:55.4). In 1,500m, Lemama won in 3:41.3, edging out Justus Muasya in3:51.3.

With national trials set for July 1st to 3rd July at the Nyayo stadium, the federation will be hosting pre-trials to select some athletes for the national trials.

In 5000m, Kamina won the men’s title in 14:19.00 ahead of Nelson Mandela (14:23.3) and Joseph Sila 14:38.3 in third position before finishing second in 3,000m after clocking 8:16.5) in a race won by Alex Nzioka from Machakos (8:17.8) and Stephen Muthinya completing the podium (Makueni) in 8:19.1.

In women’s race, Ndanu won the 5,000m title clocking 18:00.5 ahead of Ruth Kanim (Machakos) in 18:19.5 and Nympher in 18:14.5.

Machakos’ Faith Mwende won the 3,000m women’s race timing 10:10.2 ahead of Ann Mwongeli (Machakos) in 10:12.9 and Makueni’s Ruth Kanini who timed 10:30.2 for third position.

James Mwanzia won the men’s 3,000m steeplechase in 8:50.00 ahead of James Matungu in 9:02.0 and Dennis Mutuku 922.9.
