Omanyala, Kinyamal, Odira, Rokitto to lead athletes at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Ferdinand Omanyala and Wycliffe Kinyamal electrified Nyayo stadium to win in their respective races at the third and final day of Athletics Kenya national championships cum Commonwealth games trials.

The duo were named among the 63 athletes that will fly the Kenyan flag in Glasgow, Scotland starting next month.

Omanyala won the 100m title as he seeks to defend his title he won four years ago in Birmingham as he heads to Glasgow, Scotland for the Commonwealth Games.

Omanyala managed to win a gold medal in 10.02 ahead of South Africa’s  Akani Simbine who clocked 10.13 while Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon was third in 10.14.

Former world 1,500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot wants to improve from the silver medal in the 1,500m to gold in Glasgow.

For the first time, the world 800m champion Lilian Odira will be competing at the Commonwealth Games following her victory in the two lap race.

She beat Naomi Korir to second place while Janet Amimo who finished third in.

“I’m excited to have won the title for the third year running and that means I have been working hard for it and having bagged the world title, my next target is to b ring the Commonwealth Games title home and that means I have to prepare well ahead of the championships,” said Odira.

In the 5,000m men’s race, Mathew Kipsang stormed to victory clocking ahead of Cornelius Kemboi.

Cheruiyot, who has had a good competition from former world under 20 1,500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot said that the battle has been good.

Now free from injuries that have kept him out of competitions and unpleasing results the Prison Warder is looking forward to win a gold medal.

“I came here to win and winning the national title feels good to represent the country once again at the Commonwealth Games. This is a good challenge and my target is to improve on my medal,” said Cheruiyot.
