AFC strengthens the squad

AFC Leopards signed two players to beef up the squad ahead of the 2018/2019 Kenya premier league (KPL) season that kicks off next month.

The former Gotv Shield champion have signed goalkeeper and a winger, was recommended by newly appointed coach Nikola Kavazovic who is expected in Nairobi Monday 5am together with his assistant Mark Valsijevic.

The goalkeeper is expected to take up the slot of Edwin Mukolwe who ha been released. Other players who have parted ways with the 13-time champions are Mike Kibwage, Victor Majid, Ray Omondi, Duncan Otieno and Alex Orotomal with the last two having been signed by Nkana of Zambia and St George’s of Ethiopia respectively.

“We thank them for their services to the club and we wish them the best in their future endeavours,” club secretary Oscar Igaida said.

The club has signed defender Moses Chikati from Kakamega Homeboyz and renewed contracts of five regulars namely Marvin Nabwire, Jaffary Owiti, Robinson Kamura, Whyvonne Isuza and Abdalla Salim.

Defender Joshua Mawira will be making a return to the den after his plans to study abroad failed to materialize.

Igaida said the club is looking to unveil its new-look technical bench next week following the appointment of the Serbian duo and departure of goalkeeper trainer Matthew “Ottamax” Owino.

Meanwhile, the team will start preseason training on Tuesday in what will be the first session for Kavazovic and his assistant Valsijevic who doubles up as a fitness trainer and match analyst.

Kavazovic, who agreed to a two-year contract to take over from Rodolfo Zapata, has his work cut out with a key target being to end the 20-year wait for a league title.

The 43-year-old is the immediate former coach of top Botswana side Township Rollers before resigning on October 16 this year.

He joined Rollers in July 2017 and won a double – Botswana Premier League and the Mascom Top 8 Cup – in his first season at the club. Besides local achievements, Kavazovic also guided the Botswana giants to the group stage of the Caf Champions League for the first time
