Aga Khan’s Kariuki dominate Private & International schools swimming championships

Aga Khan school Sean Kariuki proved he has a bright future in swimming after winning 7 Gold and two silver medals in the just ended Private & International Prep schools Sports Association (PIPSSA) Invitational Swimming championship held at the Brookshine schools in Kamulu /Ruai.
Over 15 schools drawn from Kiambu, Nairobi and Machakos Counties took part in the one day event that was the second in the new year following the successful meeting held in Mombasa last month.
The teams that were also ushering the new season after the biting Corona pandemic season used the event to shape up ahead of the forthcoming PIPSSA National championship slated for May 28,2022 at St.Christopher schools in Nanyuki.
It was a good outing for Alex Wanaswa of Brookshine Schools who impressed in eight different heats but went out of steam in the finals.
Nevertheless, the player of the day was Sean Kariuki of Aga Khan school who won 9 medals to prove his critics wrong.
Kariuki won the 50m freestyle, 25m breaststole, 25m Butterfly, Boys 14 &over 100m I’m and Boys over 25 breaststroke.
He also claimed the over 25 meters freestyle followed closely by Brookshine duo of Jeff Muigai and Alex Wanaswa before winning event 104 boys 12-13 backstroke, and event 108 50m Butterfly. In brief, the youngster won all the boys event for over 14 and over.
Kiambu County Chairman of the swimming Federation Stanley Kabiru praised the participants for showing top class performance.
Kabiru said their target was to nurture young talents and hand them over to the Kenya swimming Federation(KSF) for International events consideration.
He said despite the Covid-19 pandemic that affected all sporting activities, he was optimistic Swimming events will pick up from where they left.
He called upon parastal bodies, co-operates and well wishers to support swimming as a sport that has produced great talents like the Dunford Brothers and German based Lucia Ruchti among others.
Hosts Brookshine schools head teacher Lucy Njeri and staffer Beatrice Kimani were impressed by their players performance especially the exploits of Alex Wanaswa, upcoming 10 year old Tyrone Kamau who won the 25m backstroke relay, Elphas Kibet, Jeff Muigai and Christian Kago among others.
Other schools that took part in the one day qualifier ahead of the PIPSSA National swimming championship set for Nanyuki in May included Lukenya schools, Nova Pioneer, Umoja Sharks, Runda based Regis schools, The Harpoons, Aga Khan and hosts Brookshine.
