Age, just a number as Kariuki wins Kerkeng Enterprise golf tournament

Seventy year old Solomon Kariuki stunned other golfers to win the third edition of Kerkeng Enterprise golf tournament played on Saturday Madaraka Day on par 73 Kitale Golf club.

Playing off handicap 16, Kariuki defied his age to card a total of 38 stable ford points ahead of Ali Babuh with one points, leading home golfers to scoop top ten positions.

Apart from winning the title, Kariuki, playing on home course said the tournament was well arranged, setting good standards in the club.

“The course was good, better greens to allow the ball to settle and good weather because I played in the morning,” said Kariuki.

Apart from the win, Kariuki said they are encouraging youth to take up the sport after they retire from targeting smart holes.

“Am calling upon young people to take up golf. We started the programme and now it is active,” added Kariuki, the former club captain.

Babuh carded 37 points to finish second beating Clara Chesire and Dennis Plapan to third and 4th on count back respectively.

According to the organizer Stephen Malakwen said the tournament is meant to foster peace in the country and appreciate golfers who supported him all throught his reign as the captain.

“This is a family tournament meant to bring people together. Our target is to preach peace for a better tomorrow,” said Malakwen, the two time club captain.

On the commercials, Nandi Bears players were on top. Nandi’s Elly Barno and P. Terer were nearest to the pin and longest drive men while Faith Chemtai won the longest drive ladies.
