Athletics family mourns sudden demise of Patrick Cheruiyot

Kenya has been thrown into mourning again following the demise of young athlete Patrick Cheruiyot.

According to Volare Sports, where Cheruiyot was based, the budding runner passed away on Friday at a Nairobi Hospital after complaining of headache.

Volare wrote on their facebook page:

“It’s with sadness to announce that Volare athlete Patrick Cheruiyot passed away. Patrick was an upcoming athlete, training in Kapkitony, Kenya.”

They described Cheruiyot as a modest, kind and appreciative person.

“Patrick became 5th at Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi in 2018. Last April he ran Linz Marathon in 2:18 and got injured during the race. Last weekend he participated at Graz Marathon in Austria, but he had to drop out of the race at 3km point already. He complained of headache and the medical aid services helped and examined him. Nothing serious was found and he was ready to travel home.”

“Upon arrival he was admitted in Nairobi, because he still wasn’t feeling well. Treatment for malaria didn’t help him and on Wednesday 16th October a CT scan was made of his head. A brain hemorrhage was seen and on Friday 18th October, he passed away.”

“Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife Winny, his 2 children, his family at large and the teammates and close friends from Kapkitony. We will miss Patrick as a member of our team.”
