Beatrice Chebet sets 5,000m world record, digging under 14 at Oregon Prefontaine Classic

Olympic Games 5,00m and 10,000m champion Beatrice Chebet set a new 5,000m world record in today’s Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Series at Eugene, Oregon in the USA.

The double world cross country champion became the first women to run the 5,000m under 14 minutes whe she clocked 13:58.06, a repeat of last year when she set a 10,000m world record at the same track last year.

The world 10km record holder Agnes Jebet Ngetich came second when she crossed the finish line at 14:01.29 with Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay completing the podium at 14:04.41.

Other Kenyans Margaret Akidor (14:30.34) and Caroline Nyaga (14:30.45) were in 4th and 5th positions respectively.

Janeth Chepcngetich (14:40.25), Caroline Kariba (14:44.96), Maurine Chebor Jepkoech (14:50.68), Hellen Ekalale Lobun and Dorcas Ewoi were also in the mix.

The event was part Athletics Kenya to select the 5,000m team ahead of World Athletics Championships set for Tokyo, Japan in September 2025.
