Bishop Korir Memorial Peace Cross Country launched

Second anniversary of the late Catholic Bishop Cornelius Korir will be honoured by a cross country race dubbed Bishop Korir Memorial Peace Cross County.

The cross country is set to be held on 2nd November 2019 at the Eldoret Sports Club with six categories set to be competed where top six finishers will be rewarded.

According to the organizers led by Vicar General of Eldoret Diocese Father William Kosgei said their main aim is to promote peace in the region as well as the country, something that the late bishop used to preach.

Kosgei said the race will tap, nurture and mould top runners from Kenya especially in athletics.

“This will be a good thing as young talents will be tapped for future medals. We want to pray and honour our talents together. As a nation, we have a glut of talents especially in this region and we want to celebrate together, have a collective mass and worship together,” said Kosgei.

Bishop Korir died on 30th October 2017 and the race will be in honour of the man who was described as peace maker in the volatile North Rift and Kenya as a whole.

He said that young athletes as low as in lower primary will be taking part for prizes where they are anticipating to use kshs 1 million in preparations and prizes.

The race will include lower primary for both boys and girls upper primary between 12-15 years, junior secondary school boys and girls, elite men and women parish team.

“Bishop Korir’s mission was to preach peace and as bishops, we are doing it in various ways, where cross country is part of preaching peace in the country. Athletics is a big thing to bring various people together,” concluded Kosgei.
