Captain Gathuri chasing International Pairs slot at Thika Sports

Captain Wanjui Gathuri will targeting a slot during the final International Pair Qualifiers at his Thika Sports golf club on Saturday.

Gathuri alongside other home based golfers will be chasing the top five pairs to qualify for national qualifiers to be held at the Karen golf club on 28th August, with top three pairs making it for the International Pair championships to be played held at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort in Portugal.

The event Thika event, which is the last qualifiers in the six qualifiers is set to attract many golfers from across the country as they seek to make the cut.

“This is the last qualifier and we are expecting at least 100 pairs. As the captain of this club, I also want to take advantage and qualify. Each golfer will want to make the cut not just for the national qualifiers but to compete at the international championships,” said Gathuri.

The captain, who will tee off on handicap 17 said as a club, they are prepared to host such big contingent, following the COVID-19 protocols.

“As the host, we are expecting a large contingent of golfers from other clubs seeking qualification. As a club, we are ready for the battle. The course is in good shape in readiness for the battle,” he added.

He added that since it is a Kenya Golf Union event,  the encounter should be higher than expected.

“This is the last qualifier and a KGU event therefore we expect it to be so welcoming, more than any other event on our course,” added the captain.

Winners will join other members from other clubs who have already qualified for national qualifiers where the three top pairs will be seeking to fill the pairs of Mike Karanga/Steve Kiaro, Anthony Murage/James Kamenchu and Romy Sandhu/Bhamra Bilu who flew the country’s flag at the 2019 Portugal Windhoek International Pairs.
