Captains Joyline Chepkemoi and Nehemiah Kipngeno have assured Kenyans that the country’s team for this year’s World Under-20 Championships is ready to win medals in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
Reigning African Under-20 3,000m champion Joyline Chepkemoi returns to the United States in pursuit of gold in the 5,000m after finishing 22nd in the senior women’s race at the World Cross Country Championships.
“We are a team of 23 athletes, and we are fully prepared to bring medals home for the country. Training has gone well, and our coaches have given us an excellent program,” she said.
The two-time Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) 5,000m champion described making the team as a great privilege, noting that many talented athletes narrowly missed out.
The 2023 World Cross Country Under-20 silver medalist said that, with this being her final year in the junior ranks, she is determined to leave a legacy by winning gold.
“Many athletes wanted to make the team, so I feel fortunate to have earned my place. Since this is my final year in the Under-20 category, I must win gold for my country. That will be my legacy,” she said.
As team captain, Chepkemoi emphasized that the squad is united and ready for the challenge, adding that she takes time to speak with each athlete individually.
“When I talk to the athletes, they all tell me they are ready and focused on winning medals. As captain, I must love and support everyone. My role is to unite the team, not divide it,” she said.
Making his debut for Team Kenya, Nehemiah Kipngeno is equally determined to bring home gold in the men’s 5,000m.
The 18-year-old Keringet-based runner said he hopes to make a strong statement in his first appearance for the national team.
“Training camp has been going well. Our coaches have prepared us with a good program, and as we travel, our goal is to produce good results because everyone is healthy and injury-free. I always check on my teammates after training. This is my first time making Team Kenya, and I want to perform well,” he said.
Kipngeno added that the team is highly motivated ahead of the championships.
“The team is in high spirits, and we are confident that we will compete well together and make our country proud,” he said.
