Former Chief Justice of Kenya Dr. Willy Mutunga said Kenya as a nation is run by cartels who derail development.
This statement was criticized but on Saturday, Sports Kenya chairman Fred Muteti categorically said that cartels have taken up the operations in running of sports in the country, making it hard to move forward.
Addressing journalists in Eldoret, Muteti said he is fighting a war that is not easy and needs prayers to ensure that he succeeds since the cartels have taken control of major events in sports.
“It is not easy for me to move on without prayers. Cartels are dragging sports development though we are taking head on and before I leave office, I want to leave a legacy of ensuring Kenyan sportsmen and women live a better life,” said Muteti.
He said that once he was appointed into the position, he was told that they have had so many chairmen and he was not a threat to the federations.
“As sports Kenya, we have not achieved out mandate. We have failed to implement most functions of because cartels have taken over. Majority of them were in football but the current leadership has tried to wipe them out.
He said many federation since he joined the office, he has never met them, but the country needs sportsmen and women who will be remembered for their good works.
“We want to revolutionize sports in the country. Make sure sportsmen and women live in Kareni, Nairobi just like the federation officials,” added Muteti.
Above all, he managed to assist in dealing with National Olympics committee where majority of the leaders were siphoning money from the sports ministry.
“The best example is what happened in Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games where officials mismanaged funds together with kits. With that we want to clean the sport and make it a money making venture across the country,’ added Muteti.
