Chepkoech, Kibet, Korir lead bigwigs at national trials

Reigning world 3,000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech led top water and barrier runners to claim top positions ahead world championships in Doha during the national Athletics Kenya trials held at Nyayo national stadium.

The Commonwealth games champion led former world steeplechase champion Hyvin Kiyeng and reigning world under 20 3,000m steeplechase champion Celliphine Chespol to a podium finish.

Chepkoech clocked 9:45.15 ahead Kiyeng (9:45.20) and Chespol’s 9:45.24.

Africa 800m silver medalist Emmanuel Korir won the semifinal as well as Collins Kipruto to storm into the  finals of 800m.

The duo won their heats with Korir taking 1:46.6 in heat one ahead of Abel Kipsang (1:46.8) and Ferguson Rotich (1:46.9) in second and third positions respectively.

In semifinal two, Kipruto won in 1:45.7 ahead of former world world under 20 1,500m champion Jonathan Kitilit (1:46.3), Ng’eno Kipng’etich (1:46.7) and Alfred Kipketer, who clocked 1:47.0.

In women’s 800m, Eglay Nalianya (2:03.59) beat Jarinter Mawia (2:04.20) in the first heat before and Emily Cherotich timing 2:04.7 won the second heat.
