Winny Chepngetich, Maureen Cherotich and heristone Wanyonyi have qualified to compete for the country at the World Under 20 Athletics championships in Cali, Colombia.
Coming from South Africa, Chepng’etich became the first Kenyan woman to qualify for the championships in the field after winning the long jump when she jumped 6.20m during the trials for the World Under-20 Athletics Championships at Nyayo National Stadium.
The 18 beat the former national long jump champion Caroline Kola in 6.04m.
The former triple jumper completed her form four at Kericho Day last year.
After finishing 6th blast year at the under 20 championships, Cherotich won 5,000m to earn the direct ticket for the Cali championships.
The form three student at kalyet secondary school in Kericho county, Cherotich timed 15:14.26 to qualify after beating Jane Gati (15:50.55) and Deborah Chemtai was third in 16:10.01.
Reigning World Under-20 10,000m walk champion Wanyonyi will be chasing to retain his title he won last year following the victory today.
He will be the only Kenyan, just like last year, to walk to gold for Kenya when he won in 43:16.1 ahead of Stephen Ndakili who clocked 44:16.3 with Dominic Mwenda coming third in 45:50.0.
In other results, Peter Kithoma won the 400m hurdles men in 52.68 followed by Richard Nzioka (52.95) and Geoffrey Rono settled third in 55.31 with 1-2 qualifying.
In the women’s 400m hurdles, Rahab Wanjiru timed 1:03.49 ahead of Valentine Mokaya who clocked 1:05.41 while Faith Cherotich sealed the podium in 1:05.43
