Chepsaita Residents Receive Free Medical Care Ahead of Great Chepsaita Cross Country

Residents of Chepsaita in Uasin Gishu County benefited from a free medical camp on Tuesday, December 2nd, ahead of the third edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run set for Saturday, December 6th, at the Chepkemel Dispensary.

The camp, organized with the Ministry of Health, served as a key precursor to the upcoming World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold event, with at least 1,500 residents benefiting.

Bringing together top government officials and local residents, the initiative reaffirmed the commitment to taking quality healthcare services directly to communities.

The Ministry’s Director of Curative and Nursing Services, Dr. Andrew Toro, led the health officials, accompanied by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Biiand event patron Farouk Kibet, during the outreach that continues to play a vital role in early diagnosis, treatment, referral, and community health education.

Kibet noted that the medical camp reflects the marathon’s broader mission of empowering the community beyond athletics.

“The Great Chepsaita Cross Country is more than a race; it is a platform for nurturing healthy lifestyles. This camp ensures our people receive critical health services as we prepare for this year’s event,” he said.

“Today’s exercise has seen more than 500 new SHA registrations, which is good news. If leaders would set an example by seeking treatment in the country, people would have more confidence in initiatives like SHA,” Kibet added.

He emphasized the importance of investing in the health sector, stating:

“Health is wealth. Without good health, we can do nothing. I appeal to the government to give this sector the seriousness it deserves.”

The Great Chepsaita Cross Country has grown into a significant annual event that not only promotes athletics but also champions community development initiatives.

Dr. Toro reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting such programs and expanding access to essential health services across the region and the country.

“Patients requiring specialized attention will be referred to appropriate hospitals to ensure timely care,”he said.

He also highlighted the Ministry’s increased investment in mental health support, particularly in response to rising cases of drug and substance abuse among young people.

“Counselling and community health education remain priority interventions to protect families and support those affected.”

Dr. Toro encouraged residents to enroll in SHA, noting that the programme protects households from high out-of-pocket health expenses and ensures access to care for all Kenyans.
