Chirchir, Nyakiruri in cloud nine in Narok

Monica Chirchir and Damacline Nyakiruri were women’s 10,000m and javelin winners in today’s third and final Athletics Kernya Track and Field meeting at Narok Stadium.

Chrichir who finished second in Mumias two weeks ago, endured the morning chilly weather to claim the title ahead of Gladys Koech and former world cross country champion Irene Cheptai for second and third positions respectively.

“It was a good race after losing last weekend’s meeting in Mumias. I want to make the team for All Africa Games,” said Chrichr who trains in Iten.

Nyakiruri threw 48.82 to claim the thrower’s title ahead of Dorothy Chepngetich in 44.82 as Salome Orenge in 44.53.

Daniel Mungut ran the fastest time to win heat one in the 1,500m. Mungut clocked 3:44.0 ahead of Eliud Kipsang (3:45.8) while George Manangoi, competing on home course won heat six in time of 3:50.9 ahead of Leonard Bett in second position timing3:51.2.

“It was a pleasure running and winning at home, being the first time ever. I heard people shout my name and I realized how they love me,” said Manangoi.

In women category, former world military games 1,500m bronze medalist Selah Jepleting won the women’s heat one in 4:18.3 ahead of Nesphine Jepleting 4:27.5 and Mercy Chepkorir in third position timing 4:29.1.

Heat two was won by Qualine Kiprop 4:21.7 ahead of Caroline Nyaga (2:24.0) and Janeth Muvinya (4:23.3).
