Discovery Kenya 10km Road race that was set to be held on Sunday, February 2nd has been cancelled.
Race organizers led by Central Rift chairman Abraham Mutai said that due to the installation of new Eldoret Catholic Bishop Dominic Kimengich.
Kimengich will resume office following the demise of then bishop Cornelius Korir in 2018.
Mutai explained that the race was to start at the same time as the mass, which they will be closing all road in the town, hence making it difficult for the race to go on where the finish line was next to Eldoret Catholic church.
“We have many activities in this town could not allow us to host the event considering that there is the installation of the new bishop for Eldoret,” said Mutai while addressing the press at Eldoret Sports Club.
He added that they had to consult with police and all stakeholders and agreed that the event be cancelled to next year so that they are able to concentrate much.
“What really made us cancel is because the rate of the traffic in Eldoret on that day, will not allow us to close the roads for the event. The race sponsors have agreed to that and now we are preparing for next year,” he added.
However, he appealed on athletes to train and prepare for the forthcoming races.
“I have to urge all athletes who were preparing for this race to continue training. As we close the cross country season, be ready for track and field and more events coming in this region,” he appealed.
He urged athletes to bear with the situation because they support the church and athletes need the spiritual nourishment for their activities.
